Many colleges and universities use the Internet to distribute audio/video content for educational, informational and promotional purposes. In certain cases, audio/video content is incorporated into course materials to simulate the classroom environment. Acacia’s DMT® technology covers the transmission and receipt of this digital audio/video content.
Typically, audio/video content is digitized, compressed and stored prior to transmission via the Internet. Upon request from an end-user, the content is transmitted via the Internet and received to be viewed in a downloadable or streaming format on the end-user’s computer. This process is covered by Acacia’s DMT® technology. For more information on how the language of our DMT® patents applies to these activities, please see the table below (provided in .pdf format).
Our revised Non-Profit Education Provider License Agreement covers non-profit colleges, universities, schools and companies in the field of education that use audio/video content in the manner described above. The revised license agreement includes an annual fixed fee royalty payment that is based on the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) students, and exempts non-profit colleges and universities with less than 1,000 students. These terms will be available to non-profit U.S. colleges and universities that enter into the license agreement with Acacia on or before December 1, 2005.
If your school has less than 1,000 FTE students, please print, complete and return a copy of our Exemption Form (link provided above), so that we may update our records accordingly.
